A creative children’s ministry initiative from Gordon-Pymble Uniting Church is helping young people engage with the meaning of Easter through storytelling, humour and accessible faith conversations — and the congregation is now inviting churches everywhere to share the resource.

The church has produced a series of short videos featuring Quirky the Quokka, a cheerful animated character designed to help children explore big questions about faith in ways that are simple, engaging and age-appropriate. Known collectively as the “Quirky the Quokka” videos, the series includes a collection of Easter-themed episodes created especially for families, congregations and children’s ministries.

Developed as part of the church’s local children’s ministry, the videos aim to translate complex theological ideas into language and imagery that younger audiences can understand.

“We created Quirky to explain big church concepts to the little hearts and minds in our congregation,” the team behind the project shared. “Our hope is that these videos can be a resource that is useful for others too — wherever you may find yourself in the Uniting Church of Australia, or somewhere else in the world.”

The Easter series focuses on helping children understand the story at the heart of the Christian calendar, presenting themes such as hope, love, sacrifice and new life through storytelling that balances faith teaching with warmth and playfulness. By using a friendly character and short, accessible episodes, the videos aim to support parents, carers and ministry leaders who are looking for ways to talk about faith with children in meaningful yet approachable ways.

Children’s ministry leaders across churches often face the challenge of communicating profound spiritual ideas in ways that resonate with younger audiences. Resources like Quirky the Quokka offer a ready-made tool that can be used in Sunday programs, at home, or in school and community settings, particularly during the busy Easter season.

The Gordon-Pymble team says the project has grown organically out of their local ministry context but was always intended to be shared widely.

The videos can be accessed through the Quirky the Quokka YouTube channel, allowing congregations across Australia — and internationally — to incorporate them into worship, children’s talks or online ministry.

The ministry team also hopes the project will become interactive, inviting children and families to help shape future episodes. If a child has a big question about church or faith, or if ministry leaders have ideas for new topics, they are encouraged to contribute suggestions.

Questions or ideas for future videos can be submitted via email to larissa@gpuc.org.au, creating an opportunity for collaboration across congregations and communities.

At a time when churches continue exploring new ways to connect with younger generations, the Quirky the Quokka series reflects a growing emphasis on creativity and digital storytelling within ministry. Short-form video content has become an increasingly important tool for engaging children who are already accustomed to learning and communicating through online media.

By combining theology with storytelling and a distinctly Australian sense of fun — embodied in the choice of a quokka as its guide — the project highlights how local ministry initiatives can become shared resources that strengthen the wider church.

As Easter approaches, Gordon-Pymble Uniting Church hopes Quirky’s adventures will help children encounter the Easter story in fresh ways, sparking curiosity, conversation and faith formation well beyond a single congregation.
